DOUBLE FEATURE FRIDAY #7

by

Welcome to Double Feature Fridays, a weekly competition in which I challenge YOU to pair the week’s new releases with your favourite older or classic films.

Each week I name the new theatrical releases as well as a few other bonus picks of my choice. Your job is to comment with what other movie you’d like to screen in a double bill with the given films, and why. You can pick any movie you want – recent, classic, whatever – just be sure get your answers in by Thursday April 19, so the judges have enough time to make their decision.

I’ll get to the movies for this week in just a second, but first it’s time to list off last week’s winners. Fingers crossed you are among them.

ROUND 5 WINNERS:

Dan Heaton, who paired American Reunion with Grosse Point Blank.

Nolahn, who paired Titanic with The Poseidon Adventure and The Hurt Locker with Blown Away.

Glen H, who paired Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fans Hope with The People vs. George Lucas.

Simon Columb, who paired Ben-Hur with Planet of the Apes.

Well done winners, bad luck losers, and go get ‘em future competitors. Your films for this week are:

The Three Stooges

Lockout

The Cabin in the Woods

Bully

Bonus: Little Shop of Horrors

Time to put on those thinking caps! Sound off in the comments section below as to what movie you’d like to see paired – and why – with each of this week’s selections.

  • The Three Stooges and The Blues Brothers (two movies about people trying to save the orphanage they grew up in)

Lockout with Escape from New York (I was going to go with one on the many movies about escaping from a prison in space but the trailer makes it look a lot like Escape from New York so I went with that)

The Cabin in the Woods with Tucker and Dale vs Evil (two movies that play with the clichés of cabin in the woods movies)

Bully and Bully (2001) (a documentary and a based on real life movie, both about bullying)

Little Shop of Horrors and The Rocky Horror Picture Show (explanation not required on this one)

  • The Three Stooges with Dumb and Dumber (movies about foolish men)
Lockout with The Great Escape (prison break)

  • The Three Stooges with The Little Rascals (1994)–movies based on old comedy shorts.
Lockout with Escape from Alcatraz (self-explanatory)

Bully with Sleepers (revenge for past wrongs)
Little Shop of Horrors with The Little Shop of Horrors (Corman FTW!)

  • The Three Stooges | Three Ninjas Kick Back (both films about a trio that I never want to watch)
Lockout | Memento (Guy Pearce dbl feature)
The Cabin in the Woods | Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (horror bending)
Bully | We Need to Talk About Kevin (films which teach us to pay more attention to our children)
