DOUBLE FEATURE FRIDAY #8

by

Welcome to Double Feature Fridays, a weekly competition in which I challenge YOU to pair the week’s new releases with your favourite older or classic films.

Each week I name the new theatrical releases as well as a few other bonus picks of my choice. Your job is to comment with what other movie you’d like to screen in a double bill with the given films, and why. You can pick any movie you want – recent, classic, whatever – just be sure get your answers in by Thursday April 26, so the judges have enough time to make their decision.

I’ll get to the movies for this week in just a second, but first it’s time to list off last week’s winners. Fingers crossed you are among them.

ROUND 6 WINNERS:

Glen H., who paired The Three Stooges with The Artist.

Andy Hart, who paired Lockout with Escape from New York and Cabin in the Woods with Tucker and Dale vs. Evil.

Squasher88, who paired Bully with Carrie.

Courtney Small, who paired Little Shop of Horrors with The Happening.

Well done winners, bad luck losers, and go get ‘em future competitors. Your films for this week are:

The Lucky One

Think Like A Man

Chimpanzee

Bonus: Air Force One

Bonus: The Bicycle Thief

Slim pickings this week, but hopefully the bonus picks make up for it. Leave your most clever or creative pairings in the comment section below!

  • The Lucky One with The Notebook
Think Like a Man with What Women Want
Chimpanzee with Going Ape (Tony Danza and an Ape!)
Air Force One with Executive Decision
The Bicycle Thief with Biker Boyz

  • THE LUCKY ONE | ME AND ORSON WELLES
THINK LIKE A MAN | THREE MEN AND A BABY (why not?)
    CHIMPANZEE | PROJECT NIM
AIR FORCE ONE | THE FUGITIVE
THE BICYCLE THIEF | A BETTER LIFE

  • Here we go…

THE LUCKY ONE with 2008′s THE LUCKY ONES (both about returning Iraq vets, believe it or not)
THINK LIKE A MAN with 1987′s Howie Mandel opus, WALK LIKE A MAN
    CHIMPANZEE with 1987′s PROJECT X
AIR FORCE ONE with the upcoming ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER for double-feature of asskicking Presidents
THE BICYCLE THIEF with 2009′s THE ROAD (yes, I’m mailing this one in)

  • The Lucky One with The English Patient (war and romance)
Think Like A Man with Tootsie (thinking like the opposite sex)
Chimpanzee with March of the Penguins (animal documentaries)
Air Force One with Snakes on a Plane (movies involving planes)
The Bicycle Thief with 8 1/2 (Italian classics)

  • The Lucky One with Brothers (life and love after war)

Think Like a Man with He’s Just Not That Into You (two ensemble relationship comedies that I have no intention of seeing)

Chimpanzee with Tarzan the Ape Man (a film about a chimp and a film featuring Cheetah, the most famous chimp in movies)

Air Force One with Con Air (there were a few of these hijacked plane movies in the 90’s these are a couple of the better ones)

The Bicycle Thief with The Icicle Thief (classic movie and an update on the social commentary that references the older film)

  • I’d pair all of these, except for Bicycle Thieves, with a nice tall glass of Victory Golden Monkey and a percocept so as to knock myself out long enough for the next week of releases to roll in. Yikes!

Pair Bicycle Thieves with Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance for two films about ordinary men in difficult situations turning to somber, grim solutions to the problems that they’re facing in their lives.

  • The Lucky One – It Could Happen to You (films where women are considered good luck charms)

Think Like a Man – Two Can Play That Game (urban films where women try to approach things from a male perspective)

Chimpanzee – Every Which Way but Loose (films where chimps are treated like regular humans)

Air Force One – Passenger 57 (One man taking down terrorist will in the air)

The Bicycle Thief – The Kid with a Bike (films where bicycles symbolize far deeper social issues)
