DOUBLE FEATURE FRIDAY #10

by

Welcome to Double Feature Fridays, a weekly competition in which I challenge YOU to pair the week’s new releases with your favourite older or classic films.

Each week I name the new theatrical releases as well as a few other bonus picks of my choice. Your job is to comment with what other movie you’d like to screen in a double bill with the given films, and why. You can pick any movie you want – recent, classic, whatever – just be sure get your answers in by Thursday May 10, so the judges have enough time to make their decision.

I’ll get to the movies for this week in just a second, but first it’s time to list off last week’s winners. Fingers crossed you are among them.

ROUND 9 WINNERS:

Dan Heaton, who paired The Five-Year Engagement with A Very Long Engagement.

Nolahn, who paired The Pirates! Band of Misfits with The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything: A VeggieTales Movie and Irreversible with Memento.

Glen H., who paired The Raven with Se7en.

Courtney Small, who paired Safe with Mercury Rising.

Well done winners, bad luck losers, and go get ‘em future competitors. Your films for this week are:

The Avengers

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

A Little Bit of Heaven

Bonus: Ghostbusters

Bonus: The Room

Time to sound off! Leave your most clever or creative pairings in the comment section below!

  • Avengers | Watchmen
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel | The Savages (2007)
A Little Bit of Heaven | Down With Love
Ghostbusters | Zombieland (save the world from a zombie/ghost apocalypse)
The Room | Inception (both a critique on the nature of film in their own way)

  • The Avengers with The Avengers (1998) (same title, one is a demonstration of how to making a big budget blockbuster, the other is a lesson in how not to!)

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with Slumdog Millionaire (modern British movies set in India)

A Little Bit of Heaven with 50/50 (similar subject matter and if A little bit of heaven is as bad as the trailer suggests you will need to see a decent movie after to cheer you up)

Ghostbusters with Back to the Future (an 80’s sci-fi comedy double, now that brings back memories)

The Room with Wristcutters: A Love Story (no connection but, Comedy/Drama/Romance about suicide and a Comedy/Drama/Romance so bad it will make you want to commit suicide.

  • The Avengers with X-Men (a team of superheroes)
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with Shakespeare in Love (John Madden)
A Little Bit of Heaven with Just Like Heaven (umm…heaven?)
Ghostbusters with Ghost (famous comedies with ghosts)
The Room with Oldboy (a man’s life falling apart, i think)

  • Sometimes I over-think these things, so I’m gonna go justification-free and see how that works out…

THE AVENGERS with THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN
THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL with THE MILLION DOLLAR HOTEL
A LITTLE BIT OF HEAVEN with SWEET NOVEMBER
    GHOSTBUSTERS with THE MONSTER SQUAD
THE ROOM with PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE

  • Avengers with Van Helsing – famous heroes/monsters getting together

Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont – feel-good middlebrow entertainment starring hotels and classy older British actresses

Little Bit of Heaven with Dark Victory – the gold standard against which all “beautiful carefree young women discover love and meaning of life in confrontation with mortality” movies are measured

The Room with Troll 2 – midnight movie staples

  • The Avengers – Mystery Men (heroes brought together to work as a team)

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – Shirley Valentine (older British people finding love while vacationing over seas)

A Little Bit of Haven – Hearts and Souls (love and death)

Ghostbuster – Scrooged (Bill Murray films that feature the paranormal)

The Room – The Rocky Horror Picture Show (films where the audience throws things at the screen)

  • The Avengers with Serenity
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with Four Rooms
A Little Bit of Heaven with Hellraiser
    Ghostbusters with The Frighteners
The Room with Birdemic: Shock and Terror

  • I really wish someone had gone with something like Hostel for Marigold. And I say that not even because of the more obvious connection there, but just ’cause I wanted something violent and grisly paired with it. Saw 5, Antichrist, whatever.
