Double Feature Friday, Games — August 3, 2012 at 3:00 am

Welcome to Double Feature Fridays, a weekly competition in which I challenge YOU to pair the week’s new releases with your favourite older or classic films.

Each week I name the new theatrical releases as well as a few other bonus picks of my choice. Your job is to comment with what other movie you’d like to screen in a double bill with the given films, and why. You can pick any movie you want – recent, classic, whatever – just be sure get your answers in by Thursday August 9th, so the judges have enough time to make their decision.

I’ll get to the movies for this week in just a second, but first it’s time to list off last week’s winners. Fingers crossed you are among them.

Dan, who paired Step Up Revolution with White Nights and The Watch with Attack the Block.

Squasher88, who paired Killer Joe with Bernie.

Andrew Crump, who paired A Clockwork Orange with Elephant and The Blindside with Precious.

Congratulations to the winners, you updated scores have been tallied in the leaderboard at the bottom of the page. Bad luck to everyone who missed out – the good news is, you get another chance to compete…right now!!! Your films for this week are:

Total Recall

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days

Celeste and Jesse Forever

  • I think it’s too easy to suggest Total Recall to be paired with Total Recall so I’ll go with…

    Total Recall – Minority Report

Celeste and Jesse Forever – I Love You, Man (both principals featured in both)

    Glory – Gettysburg

    Machete – Planet Terror

  • Total Recall with Inception: I want to pair this with the original Verhoeven film, but that’s just lazy, so…have some action-oriented movies that question and play with reality!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days with The Goonies: the adventures of the unpopular kids! (With varying degrees of fantasy!)

Celeste and Jesse Forever with Blue Valentine: films about the degradation of a relationship!

Glory with The Patriot: watch a movie affirming positive race relations alongside…a Mel Gibson movie!

Machete with Black Dynamite: Latino/Black heroes fighting against The Man!

  • Total Recall | Mallrats (three boobs|three nipples)
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days | Little Rascals
Celeste and Jesse Forever | Friends with Kids (this will not go well, romance films)
Glory | Gangs of New York (America forming itself in blood)
Machete | Lockout (send in a bad guy to do a good thing)

  • Total Recall with Blade Runner (Philip K. Dick)
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days with Flipped (kids)
Celeste and Jesse Forever with When Harry Met Sally (best friends/lovers)
Glory with Cold Mountain (civil war)
Machete with Hobo with a Shotgun (pulpy action)

  • I finally made the leader board! Watch out world!

    Total Recall with Total Recall
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days with My Dog Skip
Celeste and Jesse Forever with My Girl
    Glory with Red Tails
    Machete with Desperado

  • Total Recall with Mars Attacks!
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days with Holes
Celeste and Jesse Forever with War of the Roses
    Glory with Dead Presidents
    Machete with Spy Kids

  • Shut out last week AND last to get my entry in cuz I was away on vacation? Ouch. Gonna have to get really creative…

TOTAL RECALL with THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU (Things Are Not As They Seem, Says Philip K. Dick DF)
DAIRY OF A WIMPY KID: DOG DAYS with MEATBALLS (Summer Shenanigans DF)
GLORY with AMISTAD (Morgan Freeman vs Slavery DF)
MACHETE with a repeat viewing of MACHETE, with a post-MACHETE cigarette in-between screenings
