Numerous sources are confirming the casting of Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx (Ray) as the titular character in Quentin Tarantino’s next feature film, Django Unchained.  Foxx has beaten out Will Smith and Idris Elba who were both rumored to be in talks for the role.  [Note: Elba has signed on to star in Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim.]

Foxx will play an escaped slave who teams up with a German dentist-turned-bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds) to free his wife from an evil plantation owner.  Word is, Leonardo DiCaprio is being considered for the antagonist and Kerry Washington may play Django’s wife.

And while Tarantino is famous for relaunching careers, it can’t really be argued that Foxx was in need of any assistance.  Since winning Best Actor in 2004, he’s gone on to perform in Oscar bait films such as Dreamgirls and The Soloist along with some solid dramas and thrillers–all of which were better than his pre-Ray career efforts (except for Collateral which is damn awesome).  So, what do you think about Foxx in a Tarantino film?  Were you really hoping the Chris Tucker rumors would come true?

  • Nothing against Foxx, but yeah, I would have liked to see any number of other people in this role, from Tucker (now that would be a comeback) to Smith (the man needs some ‘edge’ in his career, and QT would have given that to him, for sure; instead, it’s back to Vanillaville for Big Willy Style, I suppose) to, hell, an unknown. Shit, revive Todd Bridges career! He was awesome in that Black Keys video, right?

  • Shoulda been the Old Spice commercial guy…
