One of the things I liked most about the film Battle: Los Angeles (yes, I did like that movie) was how utterly unmatched the two sides of the battle were. There is something thrilling about watching well trained but outgunned military types doing their thing against all odds. Maybe it speaks to the hero in all of us – the part of us that believes that no matter what we won’t go down without a fight.
So count me as a fan of this new poster for the still improbably soon-to-be-released Battleship, an adaptation of the popular board game. Directed by Peter Berg (The Kingdom), the film centers on an international naval exercise that is interrupted by an alien invasion force. Radar jammed and contact cut off from the mainland, the naval forces have no choice but to fight back the best they can.
A ridiculous premise coming from a ridiculous place, but it does have Liam Neeson in it, so how bad could it really be? I think the poster does a good job of cutting through all the weirdness surrounding the production and its origins and making this seem like the type of film that could be worth something. This poster edges me incrementally toward the place where I might become excited for this film, if only for the messed up spectacle that it might make.
What do you think? Does this poster float your boat, or does it sink your battleship?

Liam Neeson is very quickly tapping his cachet as far as being part of projects like this. We’ll see if The Grey and Battleship further sully the man’s name or become notches on his impressive bedpost. My bet is on the former.

I have a feeling that The Grey will be a resounding success. I don’t think we have to worry about him losing any cachet there.
This… wellt his is a bit of a gamble.
If this movie doesn’t have Neeson, in an ominous voice, recite the line, “you sunk my battleship,” then I ain’t watching it.
