DARK SHADOWS TRAILER HITS

by

Let me start with this…

1) I am not a fan of Tim Burton (or, rather, post-Sleepy Hollow Tim Burton). We have discussed this before.

2) I’m done with vampires. The craze is out of control…

3) The Burton-Depp-Bonham Carter threesome is just getting weird at this point. I know I’m not alone in thinking this…

THAT BEING SAID…

This does not look half bad. Or it does look half bad. It depends on your view on water volume in a cup.

I think that weird Johnny Depp is a 50/50 shot here. It’s worked (the first Pirates film, Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands) and it hasn’t worked (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland). I tend to prefer Depp just acting (Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Donnie Brasco, even Finding Neverland) rather than overacting (see examples above) and we will see which one this falls into.

Furthermore… the trailer really switches gears about halfway through. I’m thinking it’s dark and eerie and revenge is coming and then… it’s the 70s? And we have a fish-out-of-water type thing a la Austin Powers going on? I’ll give them the television joke (it’s the big laugh of the trailer) but this type of thing has been done before, just without vampires. And if you want to know why that matters, well, see point 2 above.

I don’t know. I’m leaning rental at best but I know that there will be people who will rush out to check it out for all of the reasons that I won’t. And I guess that’s the beauty of movies. We all have our favorites, and some of my choices are just as baffling to others as something like this is to me.

♥♥1/2

But you tell me… are you in the Burton camp? Do you prefer bizarro Depp? And what of Eva Green (good ol’ Vesper from Casino Royale) throwing down as a witch (I say odd casting but all the power to her!)

You know what to do…

  • Justin, I do have to admit it that it looks a bit campy. I remember my mom liking the newest how because it had Ben Cross playing the main role, but this one I’m on the ledge about. Is it comedy? It is serious? Is it a serious comedy? Like the new spider-man movie, I’ll wait a couple weeks before I venture out to see it.

  • I’ve also been done with Burton for quite some time, but this trailer definitely piqued my interest.

  • This looks beyond stupid. The entire cast should be ashamed.
