The rumor mill has been buzzing around the upcoming sequel to the very successful, very awesome Star Trek reboot from a few years back (I have gone on record as saying if they are able to match the quality of the first with the last two then that trilogy would be a better trilogy than Star Wars… heresy, I know) and more specifically on the villain that Captain Kirk and crew will be fighting.
Well after Benicio del Toro fell out of the film’s production some time ago, they replaced him with Benedict Cumberbatch, most recently seen acting very well in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (a strongly acted film across the board) but the character he would be playing had not been confirmed.
But now, thanks to TrekMovie, we have an answer:
According to the site:
“TrekMovie has confirmed this with a number of sources so we no longer consider it to be a rumor. Khan is back in 2013, however sources indicate that the film is not a rehash of “Space Seed,” the original Star Trek episode where Kirk and crew first encounter the genetic superman from the past.”
I’m not a Trekkie so I’m not sure what much of that means (nor have I seen the original Wrath of Khan) but I’m excited either way. They’re really rebooting this thing and with the success of the first one (and it’s high quality) I trust Abrams and Co. as much as I do Christopher Nolan.
What do you think? Personally, I’m all in either way. I am more excited for next May than I am for this May! (Star Trek 2 > Avengers)

I’ve never been a Star Trek person, and I’ve never seen the shows or movies, but I’ll never get tired of watching the Khaaaaaaan! clip. I love hammy Shatner.

I’d rather it not be Khan. I’m no giant Trekperson, it just seems like an easy way for people to make comparisons to the older films – why not avoid that stuff when given an easy out? (Especially to have it be the second film of this series just as Khan was the featured villain from the second film of that series.)
Also, I wasn’t aware that del Toro was attached at one point…now I’m sad that he’s not gonna be in it – as Khan or otherwise. Benecio needs a good high-profile role like that, and while Cumberbatch was quality in TTSS, I still need to see a lot more before I’m sold on him.
On the other hand – none of this shit matters…I’ll be seeing the sequel regardless of who’s in it.

I’m not really sure why we need to use so much crap from the past. The whole idea is that nothing is tied down by what the shows and movies did before, so why not just make a new villain? I got a whole book about Kahn sitting at home, plus I have the movie. Not sure I need a new actor playing that role.

On top of that, it’s not as though they need the name/villain “Khan” to sell this thing. The 2009 film was a smash and, unless they fuck this up on the level of Iron Man 2 (which even then wasn’t ALL that bad), this will be, too. Why strap yourself with the pressure of living up to Ricardo’s Khan? What’s the benefit?
I can think of one, actually. Everyone knows the one weakness in the 09 film was the villain. Not sure if it was Bana’s fault or not (I dig the guy enough), but he was bland and unmemorable.

Plus, his mining ship is a giant safety hazard. Where are the railings? I know HE likes to jump 25 feet to get from one to the other, but I doubt everyone else does.
I need to watch that movie again.

Shit, OSHA doesn’t even let you have an extension cord plugged into a power strip. The future is UNSAFE.

I’m also going to call them and tell them to rename themselves to FederOSHA.
