If you’re like me and checking out The Avengers over this fine weekend (I’m one of the lucky that get to go tonight at midnight!) you will get to see a much lengthier, more action-packed trailer for this summer’s other superhero movie, The Amazing Spider-Man (Batman is a Crime Fighter, not a superhero. Thanks for playing). But if you don’t want to wait, check it out here first!
I feel like there are lots of pros, but still a few cons with this. First, the pros… I love the reemergence of Spidey’s sense of humor (see: “small knives”). I never felt like Tobey Maguire fully jumped into that realm and it seems like Andrew Garfield is all-in on that aspect. I’m in love with Emma Stone already, so seeing more of her in the trailer also makes me happy. I’m also really enjoying the mysterious nature of Peter’s parents and the fact that maybe he was always supposed to be something special. And furthermore, the implementation of the man-made spinners instead of them coming from out of his wrists is something I dig quite a bit (mostly because I’ve been told that’s the way it originally was in the comics).
The cons, on the other hand, mostly have to do with the look of the film. When things get, for lack of a better word, big, it seems to look fake. The giant sky scraper shot at the end is one example. Also, we get a couple shots that reminded me of the first POV teaser, which worries me quite a bit too. And lastly, The Lizard… he looks ok. I know they’re still trying to have some surprise when the film actually releases in July, but for me, I haven’t been impressed yet. Here’s hoping for something closer to the fabulous look Doc Ock had instead of something like the Sandman…

How about you? Am I off on the Lizard? Are you as pumped as I am for some solid Denis Leary VS. Spider-Man action? And how much would you like Sally Field and Martin Sheen to be your aunt and uncle?

Destiny! Destinyyyyy!
I don’t know. I’m losing interest in this the more of it I see. I’m not a diehard comic fan by any stretch of the imagination, but changing Spider-Man’s origin story from one of happenstance to one of fate feels like a really terrible idea; it makes it harder to relate to him. Apart from that the concept of “origins as destiny” is becoming more and more cliche.
But I like Garfield and Stone, and I like that the film has Campbell Scott and Embeth Davidtz playing his parents (even if they’re only going to be around for a microsecond). So I’m torn over the over-tread “fate” trope, the kind of janky looking effects, and my genuine admiration for the principals and supporting players.
I know I’ll see this, I just don’t know if I’m all that jazzed about it. Then again, I wasn’t all that jazzed for The Avengers and that one knocked me on my ass.
