Well, I think we all knew it was going to be big. But this big?!?!
The Avengers opened this weekend (hadn’t you heard?) and set the box office record for highest weekend gross at just a hair over $200 million (estimates show $200.3 – actual numbers will be released sometime Monday). The previous record was set last summer by Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows: Part II which grossed $169.2 million over it’s opening weekend.
My favorite statistic about this is that The Avengers, in one weekend, made more money than Thor, Captain America, and The Incredible Hulk made… in their entire theatrical runs! The highest of those, Thor, grossed $181 million during its run. That’s really quite incredible if you think about it.
Undoubtedly helping the future of the film’s box office is it’s reception. The Avengers has a 93 on Rotten Tomatoes and I haven’t talked to a single person who hasn’t enjoyed themselves while watching The Hulk lay the beat down on Loki and his army (although our own Brian seemed to have some issues with it… how dare he!). I enjoyed the hell out of it and I’m checking it out again tomorrow in fact, because, ya know, I don’t think it made quite enough money!
So the question becomes… how many times are YOU going to see The Avengers in theaters?
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!!!
THE ACTUAL NUMBERS HAVE BEEN RELEASED AND IT NOW SHOWS THAT THE AVENGERS RAKED IN $207.4 MILLION OVER THE WEEKEND! THE NEWS JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER AND BETTER FOR JOSS AND CO.
