DJANGO UNCHAINED TRAILER

by

No introduction necessary….

I’m afraid I’m going to sway a bit more towards the negative on this… while still qualifying my discussion by assuring you that I’ll be buying a ticket for this one for sure and am very excited overall.

But the trailer is only average.

I love the intro music, the opening “scene” that introduces Christoph Waltz’s bounty hunter character, and many of the visuals (including the obviously-QT shot of blood spraying upon white flowers) but there are two things that left me feeling a bit deflated. The first is Jamie Foxx. I’ve been on record as saying I would have preferred Idris Elba in the role of Django and I’m left feeling more of the same here. Foxx is fine and I’m sure he won’t distract all that much but I’m left wanting more from his performance in the couple minutes of screen time that we are seeing. The second thing I’m slightly concerned about is Leo’s accent. Did anyone else get a Tom Hanks in The Ladykillers vibe from him in this trailer? Now, where do I hold a small place in my heart for that Coen Brothers film (I know, I’m one of the few) the accent and look of Hanks’ character was all for comedic purposes, and I doubt that’s the atmosphere that Tarantino is trying to cultivate. I was also surprised that they didn’t show more of Dicaprio and also that they didn’t show Samuel L. Jackson or Don Johnson (yes, THAT Don Johnson) in the trailer. And “Justified” fans like me will also rue the lack of Walton Goggins in the trailer, but hopefully the film will give us more of Boyd!

♥♥♥1/2

Like I said, I’ll see it and I remain excited, but I just feel like they could have done a bit better with the first footage they’re showing us…

But am I alone in that thinking?

  • Agreed. The trailer isn’t a mind-blower but I’m in!

  • I am hoping that the trailer is a bit lame because of all the glorious Peckinpah type violence that Tarantino has created for this film. Maybe those were the only scenes they could show ;-)

  • That’s ok about Walton – we got Boyd’s daddy in the trailer!

And I dug the trailer. It’s not the best trailer ever, but it doesn’t need to be – they could show us fucking dogshit and we’d still be there as soon as we could.

I think Waltz and Foxx will be great, but I’m excited to see Leo FINALLY lightening up for a role. About goddamn time he hams it up and enjoys himself. He’s been a martyr and/or depressed for like 15 years straight now.

  • Not as impressive as his teaser for “Kill Bill” but I will be first in line to see this when it opens. i agree with you about DiCaprio’s performance. I hope he is a bit more menacing. After all he is the supposed villian

  • The lack of Goggins in the trailer probably has a lot to do with the on-set stuff revolving around Russell’s departure. Goggins’ role has been expanded since then, but remember that he had a smaller role to begin with.

This is an exciting chunk of footage as far as I’m concerned. For one, every shot looks great– love the blood-sprayed flowers– and shows off QT’s eye for composition and framing perfectly. For another, Waltz sounds like he’s in top form here.

I’m an admitted QT critic– I’m hot and cold on his films, liking some while finding little use for others. But this just does it for me. I’m there.

  • This trailer is little too generic for me. Still, I’ll definitely check out the movie. I can’t wait to see slave owners get killed.
