Matthew Vaughn’s R-rated take on the superhero genre from 2010 is getting the sequel treatment and the cast has been growing pretty quickly. Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall has all the returning characters from the first film (Nic Cage, Chloe Grace Moretz, Aaron Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse) and has already added the likes of John Leguizamo and Donald Faison (Turk!) to the cast.
But the big news this week is that the one and only Jim Carrey has been added to play the character of Colonel Stars. Apparently, Carrey is a huge fan of the original and has been somewhat lobbying to appear in the sequel as this character, who he actually dressed up as on-stage with Conan O’Brien once (see the picture above).
The creator of the comics themselves, Mark Millar, has spoken out about the casting and said the following:
“Nic is really good friends with Jim Carrey and it’s well known to everyone that Jim loved the first movie. In fact, I think he had lunch with Vaughn the day before that Conan O’Brien Kick-Ass/ Superman duet you can see in the link. So we’ve been talking very informally about this for a little over two years now. We didn’t quite know what Jim was going to be doing in the sequel, but the entire team loves him to bits and I’ve been a fan since I first saw him. I remember reading an interview with Spielberg, a great one back in Empire for a Jaws anniversary, where he was saying that Jim would be his choice for Chief Brodie were he shooting Jaws now. He said he could see the brilliant dramatic range Jim had as well as the comedy people knew him for at that time. For all these reasons, combined with the conversation we had with him on the phone, I’m so genuinely excited about this. I can’t wait to see what he does once the cameras are on.”
The thing that jumps out to me most is that Nic Cage and Jim Carrey are good friends! Can you imagine the two of them hanging out? Oh, man. If I could be a fly on a wall…
Other than that, I can’t contribute too much because I’ve still yet to see the first one. I’m definitely interested though and it’s just been one of those situations where I just haven’t gotten around to it. But I will be soon because this addition makes me excited to check out the sequel.

Spoilery, for those unfortunate enough to have not seen the first film (it’s on Instant, ya slackers!), but…Nic Cage is returning? That’ll be a feat. Grant that I have not read the comics, so maybe there’s a plausible reason for Big Daddy appearing here.
But it’s also Millar, who’s a great idea guy but an awful writer, so then again…maybe not. Still, this is the kind of casting that gets me amped up. Bring on the Carrey.
