THE HOBBIT TRILOGY SUBTITLES & RELEASE DATES

by

Ok, folks, here’s the details on Peter Jackson’s extravaganza…

Film 1: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is due in theaters this December 14.

Film 2: The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be in theaters on December 13, 2013.

Film 3: The Hobbit: There and Back Again will be released on July 18, 2014.

Dan Fellman, Warner Bros Pictures President of Domestic Distribution, said about the news: “We wanted to have a shorter gap between the second and third films of The Hobbit trilogy. Opening in July affords us not only the perfect summer tent-pole, but fans will have less time to wait for the finale of this epic adventure.”

It makes sense, but I could have sworn that they’d go all December releases like the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Either way, I think the first and last subtitles are easy and predictable, but that second one is really interesting. I mean, we know that Smaug is defeated along the way, but to put it into the title? I’m not so sure about that…

It doesn’t matter, really. We’re all going, right? Right.

  • I actually like each of the titles for each of the films, though it makes me wonder about how the second film will end. If it ends where I think it will– the defeat of Smaug– I think it might end up in a really weird place, unless the book’s events are manipulated such as to give the Hobbits involvement in the dragon’s defeat at Lake Town, or to add more tension to the treasure finding.

As much as the 3-film thing bugs me, I do appreciate that the final installment will land in the summer.
