News broke this week that surprised a lot of comic book fans… and no, I’m not still talking about Ben Affleck as Batman.
James Spader has officially been cast in the role of Ultron in The Avengers 2. Ultron is the main villain in the film (the subtitle after all is Age of Ultron) and is a creation of Tony Stark, much like Jarvis, who is voiced of course by Paul Bettany.
Here’s the thing. It has yet to be confirmed whether or not Spader will appear in his physical form or if it is just a voice role. I’m supportive, I suppose, if it is a voice-only role. Anyone can be menacing when it’s just a voice behind a villainous computer-generated figure.
But if he is going to appear in his physical form? I mean, c’mon. He’s not daunting at all! Compare him to Tom Hiddleston as Loki who, while not large or muscular in any way, is intimidating because of his clear insanity and crazy eyes. Spader COULD be similar in this regard, but looking at his outward awkwardness and lack of physical prowess, well, I’m not so sure about this one.
But, in Whedon we trust, right?
