THOMAS JANE REPRISES PUNISHER ROLE FOR UNOFFICIAL SELF-MADE SHORT

by

This is what makes Comic-Con so great!

This last weekend, Thomas Jane was in attendance at SDCC 2012 to premiere a new 10 minute short where he reprises his role as The Punisher. The film takes a little while to get going but ends with a beautiful pay off for any Punisher fans with Jane getting a chance to take the character much more dark and violent. Check out the video below:

Here’s what Jane had to say about the short:

“I wanted to make a fan film for a character I’ve always loved and believed in – a love letter to Frank Castle & his fans. It was an incredible experience with everyone on the project throwing in their time just for the fun of it. It’s been a blast to be a part of from start to finish — we hope the friends of Frank enjoy watching it as much as we did making it.”

Still, the motives behind this video are unclear. Marvel recently, and very quietly, reattained the rights to The Punisher. No doubt a new film will be in the works soon, if not all ready, with so many fans wanting more after the first two attempts… three, if you count the Dolph Lundgren version. So, is this Jane saying he wants another crack at it? Or is this just him having one last hoorah with a character he has a lot of respect for on his own terms? Personally, I don’t really care.

Many don’t have much appreciation for Jane’s version of the very popular Marvel character. I feel the same way about it that I feel about a lot of Jane’s films. While it wasn’t that great, I think Jane was great in it. I also think Jane has the potential to be a great Frank Castle if he could get a good script. Unfortunately, I also feel like Marvel will start from scratch, with new talent, and this will ultimately serve as a fond goodbye to Jane in the iconic skull shirt.

I will also say that I am glad this video exists and that Jane has such respect for the character. Though, what do you all think, dear readers. Do you like that Jane put this film out? Is it just a big waste of time? Do you think Jane should get another crack at Castle?
